SEG President John Eastwood Presented the Award to Yang Jidong
Recently, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) held the 2024 global awards ceremony in Houston, USA. Professor Yang Jidong from School of Geosciences at UPC won the J. Clarence Karcher Award. This is the first time that UPC scholar has received this honor from SEG.
Professor Yang Jidong, a doctoral supervisor and a recipient of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars (Overseas), holds the distinguished professor of“Guanghua Scholar”program at UPC. He has long been dedicated to oil and gas exploration, and the research and algorithm development in seismic imaging and inversion theory and method for various scales of crust and mantle. The J. Clarence Karcher Award primarily recognizes his groundbreaking proposal of a new complex-valued wave equation for viscoelastic media, which not only accurately describes the complex phase dispersion and amplitude attenuation phenomena during the propagation of seismic waves, but also blazes a trail for advancements in high-precision imaging technology, full-waveform inversion multi-parameter modeling, and other critical applications in seismology, demonstrating significant scientific value and application potential. In recent years, he has published related research findings in 34 papers (with 20 as the first author) in renowned journals such as Nature Communications, Geophysical Research Letters, JGR: Solid Earth, and Geophysics. These publications have garnered 1,274 citations on Google Scholar with an H-index of 19, reflecting a significant impact.
The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), founded in 1930, stands as one of the most influential academic organizations in global exploration geophysics. Devoted to advancing technological progress and innovation in geophysical exploration, SEG brings together a vast network of experts and scholars worldwide engaged in researches on geophysical exploration, development, and related technologies. The annual awards presented by SEG represent one of the pinnacles of honor in geophysics, symbolizing the cutting-edge of academic and technical advancements in the field. The J. Clarence Karcher Award is designed to recognize young geophysicists under the age of 35 who have made significant contributions to exploration geophysical science and technology. This year, a total of five individuals worldwide won this prestigious award.
