Recently, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) held the 2024 GOTECH AI Hackathon at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Asia Majid, Paulo Joaquim Nota, Osmund Edward Mwangupili and Renatus Mahuyu, international students from UPC, competed together and achieved third place in the world.
Organized by SPE and Dragon Oil, GOTECH AI Hackathon focuses on the important role of machine learning in predicting oil and gas production outcomes, to evaluate AI’s ability to predict production profiles within a specific area from one well to another, identify inter-well communication, and predict optimal new well target location. The participants need to use AIalgorithms to predict water and oil content, flow rate, pressure, etc. through various oilfield production data and well information data provided by the organizer.
In the competition, our students demonstrated outstanding programming skills, accurately predicted the production profile, and proposed the best drilling location for the new well. Their model underwent rigorous testing and validation by the Hackathon Committee, impressing judges with its precision and innovation, and finally achieved third place.
