The Basic Science Center Project "Drilling and production flow control of ultra/extra-deep oil and gas reservoirs" was approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China

The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) recently approved the basic science center project "Drilling and production flow control of ultra/extra-deep oil and gas reservoirs" with a direct funding of 60 million Yuan and a funding period of 5 years. The project is led by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Sun Jinsheng. It is the first basic science center project of China University of Petroleum (East China), as well as the first basic science center project in oil and gas field of China.

On-site inspection meeting

The basic science center project “Drilling and production flow control of ultra/extra-deep oil and gas reservoirs" is based on China University of Petroleum (East China) and jointly applied by Southern University of Science and Technology and CNPC Engineering Technology R&D Company.

Academician Sun Jinsheng of China University of Petroleum (East China) is the leader of the center. Other key members include Professor Zhang Dongxiao of Southern University of Science and Technology, Professor Sun Baojiang and Professor Dai Caili of China University of Petroleum (East China), and professor-level senior engineer Wang Haige of CNPC Engineering Technology R&D Company.

The experimental site, working environment, and technical support conditions were inspected via in person and virtual meetings

China has an abundance of ultra-deep andextra-deep oil and gas resources, and the efficient development is critical to hold the rice bowl of energy security. In recent years, ultra-deepformationhas emerged as a key breakthrough direction for increasing oil and gas reservesand production in China. Basins such as Tarim, Sichuan, Junggar, Songliao, Qaidam, Bohai Bay have successively discovered ultra-deep oil and gas, paving the way for increasing oil and gas reservesand production. Flow control is the key for the safety, effectiveness, and success of drilling and production. The scientific center is oriented to ensure the safety of oil and gas supply to the country's major strategic needs. The aim of the research focuses on the "stuck neck" problems and major technical bottlenecks such as ultra-high temperature and high salt drilling and production working fluid materials, malignant leakage prevention technology, flow control software and intelligent control technology. Relying on first-class platforms and leading scholars in the field of oil and gas, the scientific center plans to carry out basic research on flow control in the drilling and production processes of ultra/extra-deep oil and gas. The scientific center aims to innovate the theory and methods of flow control in drilling and production of ultra/extra-deep oil and gas, open up the international academic frontier of flow control of ultra-high temperature and pressure, ultra-high salinity, and ultra-high stress formations, and lead the development of international ultra/extra-deep oil and gas science and technology.

According to reports, the basic science center project of NSFC has been implemented on a pilot basis since 2016. It aims at the international scientific frontier, deploying ahead of time, fully exploitingthe advantages and characteristics of the science foundation system by concentrating and integrating domestic superior scientific research resources. It strives to attract and gather outstanding scientific and technological talents in different fields and different disciplines, promote the deep cross-integration of disciplines by relying on high-level academic leaders. The center has relatively long-term and stable support for scientific researchers to concentrate on research and exploration, devotes to scientific frontier breakthroughs and produce a number of original achievements of international leading level. The centeral so aims to seize the commanding heights of international scientific development, and form a number of academic highlands with significant international influence.
