Lecture by Prof. T.C.Poon, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Speaker: Ting-Chung Poon , Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
Theme: Optical Scanning Holography: A Tutorial and Review of Recent Progress
  Time: 9:00—11:00, 30th, May. 2015
Venue: Room 254, Arts & Science Building
Organizer: College of Science, Science and Technology Department, International Office

Abstract: Optical scanning holography (OSH) is a distinct digital holographic technique where real-time holographic recordings of a three-dimensional (3-D) object can be acquired by utilizing two-dimensional active optical heterodyne scanning. Thus far, applications of the technique include optical scanning cryptography, optical scanning microscopy, 3-D pattern recognition, 3-D holographic TV, and 3-D optical remote sensing. During this presentation, I will first provide an overview of OSH and will then follow with a review on some of the recent progress that has been made on OSH. Possible future applications and benefits of OSH will also be discussed during this presentation.

  Introduction:
Prof. Ting-Chung Poon is from Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Virginia Tech. His current research area includes 3-D image processing and optical scanning holography. He is author of the monograph Optical Scanning Holography with MATLAB(Springer,2007), and is the co-author of the textbooks Introduction to Modern Digital Holography with MATLAB(Cambridge University Press, 2014), Engineering Optics with MATLAB (World Scientific 2006), Contemporary Optical Image Processing with MATLAB (Elsevier 2001), and Principles of Applied Optics (McGraw-Hill 1991).

He is also Editor of the book Digital Holography and Three-Dimensional Display (Springer 2006) and has served as Guest Editor of, among other journals, International Journal of Optoelectronics, Optical Engineering and Chinese Optics Letters. Dr. Poon currently serves as Division Editor for Applied Optics and is currently Associate Editor-in-Chief for Chinese Optics Letters, and Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics . He is the founding Chair of the Optical Society (OSA) topical meeting Digital holography and 3-D imaging. Dr. Poon has been a member of the Board of Editors of the OSA and is currently on the Editorial Board of Optics and Laser Technology, the Journal of Holography and Speckle, and the journal 3D Research. Dr. Poon is a Fellow of the OSA, the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)and the Institute of Physics (IOP). He is also a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
